Sharp hooks are crucial for the successful fisherman. If it can lightly scratch your fingernail when dragged across it then it is good enough to use. If it does no,t then either sharpen it or replace it if you want to catch some fish.

During the winter months you should use a sinker when fishing. They pull the line down to where the fish are in the warm waters at the bottom of the lake or river. Check the water depth to find out what size sinker to put on your line. You may also need several sinkers, depending on the depth of the water.

A good tip for bottom fishing using shad is to cut the tail off of your bait before you place it on the hook. While your bait travels to the bottom, this technique will prevent it from spinning on your line, and prevent tangles. To sweeten the deal, the scent of the severed tail is particularly appealing to fish.

Search your fishing environment for areas of deep water. On the river, it is especially important to find very deep water. In warm weather, you will find quite a few fish in deep water. Another good place to look for them is around big rocks and under rock overhangs. If you chance upon a perfect fishing spot, take note of its location for future visits.

When using artificial bait, occasionally change the color you are using. This advice can really be helpful if you haven't gotten a bite for a long time on the water. By changing to a brighter color or a shade that you do not normally use, you increase your chances of catching the eye of that big catch, or at least a catch.

Wet your hands thoroughly before pulling in your catch. Doing that will help prevent the fish skin from drying out. This is most true when you will have the need to release your catch back to the water.

Be cautious when wading in the water. If you need to wade while fishing, be careful and move slowly. This will not only keep you safe, but it will also help prevent you from making noise that will frighten the fish away. Take your time and avoid disturbing components of the river bed.

If you are trying to catch big fish, use bigger bait. Although larger bait is more costly from most tackle stores, it can result in a larger catch. The larger the bait you bring, the larger the fish you're sure to attract, as smaller fish won't go after things they can't wrap their mouth around.
