When using shad for bottom fishing, be sure to cut the bait's tail before baiting your hook. By removing the tail, the bait will not spin and cause tangles. Also, the tailless bait can give off more of a scent that may attract more fish.

Respect the native wildlife. Whether you are fishing, hunting, or hiking, leave the environment as you found it. Keep in mind that nature belongs to everyone equally, including animals, humans and fish. Make sure you keep everything around you as pristine as possible.

Pay attention to the wind while you are fishing. When the wind is strong, the fish will be likely to go with the current and be concentrated along one shore of the lake. Cast against the wind so that your line will follow the current. If there is too gusty of a wind though, the fish will more than likely stay too low in the water to where you aren't able to reach them.

Do not allow the excitement of hooking a massive fish cause you to panic. Do not reel the fish in while it is swimming away. Simply relax your body and let the rod do the work as you drag the fish in. Once your hook has been set, try setting your drag. Always make sure that your rod is aimed towards the fish at about a 45 degree angle.
